AFAIK, ANI trailed direct-distance dialing in the Bell System.
I believe the first office with DDD was Englewood, New Jersey, a 5XB with ANI/AMA. The second was Enid, Oklahoma, or Harlingen, Texas, similarly 5XB with ANI/AMA.
