Today, I was walking by a 7-11 Store in San Clemente, California. There were two fairly recent Verizon pay phones, complete with Verizon's version of Ma Bell's bell logo.

San Clemente has been Pacific Telephone/Pacific Bell/SBC/ and now AT&T since the early days.

Verizon is obviously in the pay phone business outside its operating territory.
