Lifestyles Of Rich & Famous Packets Inside Big-Iron Routers
Ok, packets are neither rich nor famous, but they do live inside routers, if only ephemerally.
I would like to know the nature of there existence and what influence they have on memory consumption inside a router.
It would be easy to ask for a document showing the memory management scheme for packets in high-end Cisco routers, but was not sure if any are available.
The most important thing I would like to know is what influence the length of an Ethernet frame has on memory congestion inside the router. Is the memory manager highly conservative? Slot-based? A mixture of both?
Also, if there are any documents showing memory management schemes that are prevalent across manufacturers, I'd like to see them.
