How many subnets now ? open original image

Old version: (2^x) - 2 New version: 2^x x = # of host bits

In the newer version, it says because of "ip subnet-zero", the first and last subnet can now be used and is turned on by default in 12.x

Is this true? So now the answer to how many subnets are there?... is

2^x...?

Thanks for the help!

That is correct, read below for Cisco's take.
