too far from the CO? Use a second pair

For rural users too far from the central office to qualify for ADSL, why doesn't the phone company just use a second (or more) pair of wires from the bundle on the pole, effectively doubling the wire size, e.g., in

I don't know about your rocker but it doesn't work that way.

In addition to having babies simultaneously, both lines will have noise-- and the noise will most likely be from the same sources, so it will be correlated. This means you won't get any improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio from combining them. You'll just get the same signal plus the same noise, only louder.
