Please log in for more thread options HI Folks I have to install Oracle at home and so far it is no go as I have a dynamic IP. Can anyone tell me if the Linksys BEFSR 41 would allow me to fake a static IP? Thanks for any help networking is not my area

Please log in for more thread options june.mcpake@gmail.com says... Most home routers use 192.168.0.100+ for DHCP. You can force your computer to an unused address, such as 192.168.0.50. You will also need to set up your DNS and Gateway address. The gateway would be your router, typically 192.168.0.1. You can find out what DNS addresses your router uses, or just set it to the router's address (192.168.0.1), and it will pass it on. From a command prompt, you can do an "IPCONFIG /ALL" to see what your current settings are so you know your router's address and maybe DNS it uses if it passes them on (my related BEFSX41 usually set it to the router when the computer booted up, but would pass on the real addresses if I did an IPCONFIG /release, then /renew.) -- If there is a no_junk in my address, please REMOVE it before replying! All junk mail senders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!! http://home.att.net/~andyross

If it's internal only, then yes, you can use static IP. 1) check the router's settings and status using http://192.168.1.1 In particular, look at the DHCP SERVER settings. It ought to be ENABLED, offering addresses from 192.18.1.100 to .200 (or something like that). The status page ought to show the DNS servers from your broadband provider (cable modem, DSL, whatever). 2) On the machine running the Oracle server, configure the network for a "STATIC IP". Under Windows, it's My Computer -> "Control Panel" -> "Network Connections"
right-click the "Local Area Connection" to get the pop-up menu,
select "properties". Select "TCP/IP" from the scroll area and click the "PROPERTIES" button. Change it from "Obtain an IP address automatically" to "use the following IP address" address: 192.168.1.10 <<< last digit can be from 2-99 if the DHCP starts at .100 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 <<< the router's address My WinXP machine shows that it may still obtain the DNS server address automatically, independent of the address. If you're running another version of Windows, you may have to manually enter the DNS Server addresses you obtained from the router's query to the WAN. (DNS is the service that maps names to IP addresses). All other machines on the LAN may continue to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) for automatic LAN address assignments, but the server and router will always be at the same addresses. I'm surprised that your BEFSR41 is still running reliably. Mine kept rebooting so I replaced it with a non-Linksys router. -- -- mejeep deMeep ferret!
