Are the dsl modems handed out by the phone companies interchangable?

I've got a couple westel boxes from the phone company and whatever flavor
Covad hand out taking up space and I figure as soon as I toss them
I'll want it to use as a replacement to troubleshoot a user's dsl problem?

(not that I've ever seen one fail, but lightning may strike someday.)

Don't blame me. I voted for Gore.

You may need to consider keeping them around or locate the software needed
to flash a replacement to support the network you are going to use them on.

Some companies load customized versions of the OS into the boxes. Much like
the cell phone companies modifying the phones they sell to work only on
their system.

An example of this can be found at the following link
http://www.actiontec.com/support/broadband/gt701-wg_firm_updates.html. One
version of the firmware only for use on the Qwest network and one for the
rest of the world is the way I read that web page...

Being paranoid I would suspect in this case Qwest is trying to lock the
boxes they rent or sell so that they will only work on their network.
