WRT54G No Internet Access

Hi,

I have a WRT54G Ver. 2 router with the latest firmware. Just today my internet access stopped working on all computers. I had this problem once before (after a power outage), and I think I resolved it by unplugging everything several times and eventually it just started working again.

If I plug the cable from the modem directly into my PC, the internet works. If I plug the cable into the router, I have no internet access on any network PC. I read something about turning on MAC address cloning, but that didn't work. I shut everything down, booted the modem first, then the router, then all PCs. It still didn't work.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've run out of things to try. Right now I have the modem directly connected to my PC, but as soon as I plug the cable into the router it doesn't work. I copied what was listed on the status page for the router:

Firmware Version: v4.21.1, Nov. 6, 2006 Current Time: Thu, 22 Nov 2007 22:26:38 MAC Address: 00:14:85:28:9E:CA Router Name: WRT54G Host Name: Domain Name: hsd1.ma.comcast.net. Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP IP Address: 71.192.58.165 Subnet Mask: 255.255.254.0 Default Gateway: 71.192.58.1 DNS 1: 68.87.71.226 DNS 2: 68.87.73.242 DNS 3: MTU: 1500

Thanks, Doug

The status page looks good. Could you please open a command prompt window on a PC wired to the router. Verify in the browser that the status page on the router still looks like the one you have posted. Now enter "ipconfig /all". Please post the full output of that command. Do the same for "netstat -rn".

Next enter "ping 192.168.1.1". You should see responses.

Next enter "ping 66.249.89.99". Again, there should be responses.

Next enter "ping

If something does not work, please post the exact error message you get.

I tried ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew several times, but I still can't access the internet. I can share files between computers and ping other network computers.

You can do a last test: "traceroute 67.249.89.99". I guess it will end at 192.168.1.1. Looks like some issue with the router. It is not forwarding packets anymore. It is difficult to tell, why that happened. Maybe some hardware failure or the flash memory got bad.

You can try to upload a new firmware file to the router. If you already had the latest firmware just upload the same file again. This will overwrite the firmware in the flash memory and refresh it if something got bad there.

After the firmware upload do a full reset of the router to factory defaults by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds. Make sure the reset button is not broken checking the lights on the router during reset.

After the reset try again. You should have internet immediately as you use DHCP for the internet connection unless you had MAC address clone configured. The MAC address you have at the moment on the router is

00:14:85:28:9E:CA. If that is not the MAC address printed on the label underneath the router you have used MAC address clone to this MAC address.

Again check the status page if it still looks O.K.

If it still does not work, I think your router has gone bad... :-(

It's working again but I don't know how or why. I found that if I checked under Network Connections it showed my connection to the router, and also 'Internet Connection' above it under Internet Gateways. The gateway was disabled, but every time I tried to enable it, the icon disappeared and then a few seconds later reappeared saying 'Disabled' under it. I rebooted router and modem again a few times out of desperation and the gateway connection suddenly went from showing 'Disabled' to 'Connected', and the internet worked on all network computers.

Any idea what the hell is up with this thing? Is it my modem or router? Now any time we have a power outage this thing is going to drive me nuts trying to fix it but I still don't know what went wrong in the first place. Everything under the router status page looks the same except I have a different IP address now.

Thanks for the help.. I just wish I knew how/why it fixed itself all of a sudden.

That is the icon for the UPnP server on the router. UPnP allows you to configure port forwarding on the router and may also be able to turn off the gateway (packet forwarding). Maybe you should turn off the UPnP support on the router. You usually don't need this except for online gaming.

Turn everything off (better to just unplug)... then power up the modem, wait a minute and then the WRT, wait a minute, then the 'puter.....

As you saw, unplugging works, but it depends what order you restore power/plug em back in..... wrong order, doesn't work.. right order it will... easiest to unplug everything again and then plug it back in in the correct order

(ps, happens now and then from the power companies, used to have that happen in the fall in the baltimore area, moved and it doesn't happen anymore.... Unplugging is cheaper than moving )

Power up order.......

see other post for order ((or an abreviated list here), there is a technical reason for that order, but suffice it to say that it will work just fine if you do it in the correct order - all off - then on a minute or so apart - modem- wap/router - puters
