setting up a wireless network

i was wondering if there is a way to setup a wireless network so that i might use my laptop anywhere in my house but without having a seperate computer setup with a router. in other words can i set up a router somehow by its self that plugs into the modem and into a wall outlet for power?

That's typically how it's done

Sure, you typically need to cable it first to configure the SSID, password, encryption, enable firewall, and set to either router or AP only, but after that, you can unplug and use your wifi card. That's what I do anyway. Most inexpensive routers have a CD to guide you through this.
