Official e-petition for free WiFi throughout the UK

The UK government took over 22 billion pounds when selling off licences to operate 3G. We propose that now is the time for the government to invest some of that money in providing free WiFi access in ALL towns & cities across the UK. The digital age is here. Communication is vital. This country needs this infrastructure to be readily available to all free of charge. This action will future proof all aspects of business within the UK.

Bad idea. The free market will ensure the best delivery of products and services. The government will just screw it up. Nothing is ever free

Its a basic fact of economics that you can't spend the same money twice.

The 3G licences could be paid either as one lump sum or as 50% initially with the remainder being paid in installments between the

6th and 10th anniversary of licence award with the appropriate adjustment for inflation and lost interest.

The circa 22 billion raised in the 3G auctions financed improvements in the health service and education and was either spent or preallocated by the Treasury years ago to reverse the wrongs of the Thatcher/Major era. The fact is that for two decades Thatcher and Co deliberately underfunded public services and squandered oil and gas revenues on unemployment benefit rather than spending it on capital projects and real employment.

Her sick spiteful hatred of the working man led to her crushing the miners and destroying the coal industry thereby making the UK dependent on imported gas, oil and perversely even coal to support our basic energy needs despite there still being 200+ years reserves of coal available a mile or so underground. So unless you can somehow con Vodafone and O2 etc into buying some more spectrum for a huge sum of money then your idea is only fit for the bin.

The upshot is there will be no free wi-fi funded from 3G licences. Blame Thatcher, she wasted a prime national asset in the 80's and 90's and made us dependent on the Libyans and Russians for our gas and thus also our electricity. After she's dead and gone and the millions celebrating have danced on her grave until their shoes are threadbare she will undoubtedly be revealed as being a KGB agent.

You thought it ended on May 2nd 1997 but the legacy of Thatcher's Britain will scar the country for generations and centuries to come.

What a cunt.

2 problems, governments aren't particularly good at doing anything and the 22 billion would need to be refunded because this would be directly equivalent to the government licensing a company to build a turnpike and then building a parallel freeway itself.
