Laptop antennas on hinges.

Just some general confusion...

I just finished repairing a Compaq 2120US laptop (bashed in power connector) and noticed the rather poorly located and tiny wi-fi antennas. |

two antennas are mounted on the display hinges. Also note the halfway crunched coaxial cable. As expected, the signal strength on this laptop was considerably less than with an HP z4000 serial laptop I was also working on (cola in the keyboard), which uses coaxial antennas near the top of the display. With the display perfectly vertical, the signal appeared to be equally strong in front and in back of the laptop. However, when I tilted back the display about 45 degrees, the signal was much stronger in the direction of the user (towards keyboard), than out the back.

is considerably better than installing it UNDER the keyboard.

Search eBay for "mini pci antenna" for other examples.
