How severe NLOS? Just over a ridge or on the other side of a 5,000 foot mountain? Trees?

What speed do you need? 54 Mbps or can you get by with one 1 Kbps?

Is putting a midspan way repeater an option?

Specs? There are only three; price, LOS, and speed. Everything else is secondary.

If you have enough money, 8-10 miles is easy. If you don't, it's not going to happen. Are you ready to spend about $15,000 on this project for a licensed wireless link? That's what it will take to get that kind of range across a crowded city (assuming you can find a coordinated frequency and path). Otherwise, such ranges are impossible on the unlicensed bands due to interference from other users.

LOS is line-of-sight. You either have it or you don't. If you don't, you're not going to communicate without heroics (repeaters, reflectors, multiple links, etc). If you have line of sight, including the Fresnel Zone clearance, wireless works just fine.

Speed can always be traded for range. Twice as far shows up as a 4 times decrease in speed. You might be able to go 8-10 miles, but you won't go very fast.

Here's a sample link calculation:

If you find some likely candidates for your link, run the numbers. If your fade margin is inadequate, you may have a link, but it won't be very reliable.

What kind of money do you want to spend? How fast?

I have a twelve mile shot with a midspan relay running 200Mbps of sustained user capacity . Total cost: $50,000
