Do "super g" and MIMO need to be at both ends?

I'm going to be getting a laptop with built-in b/g wireless, and a wireless router to go with it. I just assume the laptop won't have any of the suped up versions, but just the standard b/g. Is there any point in having the faster versions in the router if they aren't duplicated at the other end?
