changing mac address

I have a broadcom/gemtek wireless card and I can't seem to change the mac address that it uses. I've tried the manual 'enter in a number into the locally administered address section' method. and I've also tried the technitium software package. The first method allows me to enter in a number but flat out doesn't change anything.

The second method takes the new mac address and helpfully lists it as inactive in the software window while showing me that the old address is still being used. The funny thing is it will show the new address being used only if I disable the wireless card. ipconfig and wireshark confirm that the old mac address is still being sent out.

Anyway to get it to use a new address without getting a new card?
