There is such a proliferation of wireless notworks where I live. Half the time it not *my* router I'm connecting to. How can I make sure that I get to my router?

Set a unique SSID and set up to connect to only that one. Roll a decent WEP key or select a good WPA password too...

If you're using a Windows XP O/S, then you can set the preferred network to connect to. If the O/S is not that, then you could use a different cannel until you select one where no one else is on. I would suspect that you have lest everything in its default out of the boxes state like everyone else in the world seems to do.
