authentication range Linksys

My 802.11g wireless connection won't authentication with the AP if the signal and quality levels are below 40%. Yet once it's authenticated it will work at any level. In practice this means I have to move the laptop into the same room as the AP to get it communicating and only then can I use it in other rooms around the house. The AP and PC card are both Linksys 54GS. Is this normal ?

I think I may have the same problem. I was assuming that the laptop adaptor was not initialising properly on start up and was fiddling with the drivers etc. but after your post looked at signal strengths and noted the problem was at or below 50%. What I have done is select the laptop card to mixed mode rather than g only and on a small sample so far it does seem to be better.
