Hi there John, I do appreciate your help and I'm sorry for those who attacked you and Jeff who were only trying to help. I, for one, will remain civil with all people trying to advance knowledge in this arena fraught with guesswork. I hope I've proven the legal point (with citations as requested) about the logging of the MAC address and hostname that was introduced in court by the RIAA (see previous post). My question now centers around logging of the ROUTER hostname. We've already established that the MAC address of the router is logged by the ISP but does anyone really know if the router hostname is likewise logged? I couldn't find answers in google either way whether the ROUTER hostname is logged by your typical ISP (who definitely logs MAC addresses and IP addresses).

China is the perfect example of a nation where it's unhealthy not to be thorough about security, where individuals get shot in their head on a daily basis if they did surf a site the Govt has banned. So, if you're not an expert on security, shut tha fuck up if you do not want lives on you conscience.

It will vary from ISP to ISP, so I don't think you can make any valid generalization other than to say it _may_ be logged in a way that _may_ present some risk. That said, given that the ISP logs the IP address, I think the MAC issue is largely irrelevant. >but does anyone really know if the router hostname is likewise

The ISP probably logs IP addresses, but I personally doubt the ISP keeps track of MAC addresses except in cases where the hardware device has been provided to the customer and/or is used for authentication. -- Best regards, FAQ for Wireless Internet: <http://wireless.navas.us>
