what i did was pick up a good used taxi antenna with a 30 foot cable
and a magnetic base that sticks to the car roof (it's about 3 feet tall
from base to tip). i put that on the roof of my house and ran the cord
down to my bedroom where my laptop is. i put an alligator clip on the end
of the cable and then cut the end of my pcmcia wireless card carefully
to expose the spot where the antenna is located and attach the alligator
clip. i pick up signals over a good quarter of the city now, several
hundred apis - unfortunately most of them locked out, although there are
still quite a few open ones still out there.
