Will lack of pre-XP OS driver support be the problem? or will the
hardware these older systems are running be a problem with 80211.n?

By the time 802.11n is ratified there will probably be a lack of driver
support for XP, doesn't major support cease in 2009. New laptops that
support PCMCIA will probably be non-existent so driver support for
draft2 N versions of these will probably fade away.
