Telefonica, which operates under the Movistar brand in Mexico, has officially notified telecommunications regulator IFT that it plans to switch off its 2G mobile service this year, reports business daily El Economista, citing IFT General Coordinator of User Policy Alfonso Hernandez Maya. The same paper last month reported that rival AT&T has likewise informed the IFT of plans to suspend its 2G service with a view to freeing up spectrum and increasing the capacity of its 4G LTE network.
