Years ago a telco employee told us deafness in one ear was common because of heavy use of the phone, such as test sets, headsets, etc. Craft people use such devices to listen for test tones (some of which are loud), noise, etc. Older equipment wasn't as well filtered and there were numerous loud pops as connections were made and broken.

You may wish to consult the telephone pioneers.
