An external antenna, being a passive device, would probably cause no problems and probably would not lead to any issues of its use even though one might argue that such an antenna could be deemed illegal on the grounds that the cellphone's FCC Type Acceptance only is for the manufacturer's supplied antenna.
The argument being made here about illegality concerns the use of active BDA's.
