DMP's Arrogant Attitude.

We have been considering a switch to DMP but I am really put off by the regional managers arrogant attitude. They seem totally unhelpful to a company considering a switch to them. I can't imaging they are all that helpful to their dealers.

Does anyone have recent experience with them?

Thanks, Miles

I really don't like DMP panels. Though the Super6 looked pretty nice when I installed one a few years back for a DSW shoe stires.

But only if they will condescend to do business with you.

Dunno, never had that problem to begin with, so can't speak to it.

When the owner of Desert alarm died I picked up a lucrative model home program for a builder he had been working with. Dave had installed DMP XR20s in the models. I tried to contact DMP about continuing to use DMP panels in that development and if it worked out maybe using DMP in other locations as well. They gave me the run around and I just gave up and jerked the DMP panels and put in Napco panels which Napco was glad to give me for free. I wound up putting about 160 Napco panels in that development, and another 30 or 40 in other homes for that builder.

A couple years later when I bought out the accounts left with Desert Alarm from Dave's widow I contacted DMP again, and at first got the run around, and then they tried to manipulate me into committing to using only DMP panels before I could even buy one new panel to play with and see if I liked it. (I had the pulled panels still on the shelf, but had not played with them.) They also tried to old support hostage to do this even though they didn't have anybody else in the area who could service the DMP panels installed in Yuma.

After much hullaballoo several months and dealing with four or five different people I was told I was setup with an open terms account and I could buy some stuff whenever I was ready. It was not an easy or pleasant process to even get to that point. In the mean time I had solved most of my issues with the DMP panels in service including programming access without any help from them. I tried a couple times to actually order parts on that account, and each time I was told I needed to do something else. I finally went ballistic. I got ahold of Dave Sharp who said that he had decided to change my account to COD (I was already approved for net terms by their credit people) and servicing dealer only, but I still had to make an opening order and jump through some hoops to get all setup. (This literally took about 4 or 5 months) The things I had needed to order during that time I had gotten elsewhere or third sourced. Dave suggest I buy a demo keypad from them, and all would be wonderful for the future. I didn't need or want it, and I couldn't understand why he was trying to sell a demo keypad to somebody he would not sell panels to. (servicing dealers can only buy replacement parts) In the interest of future trade and supporting my clients I bit the bullet and gave Dave my credit card number to buy the suggested demo keypad anyway. All I ordered was the demo keypad. NOTHING ELSE. That's when the fight started. I called him and challenged the charges and the fact that I did not order everything he sent me and charged me for. He said he would be by my office in a couple weeks to pick up the extras and then refund my money. That never happened.

I finally after several years just recently got a check from Dave for things I did not order that were charged to my credit card.

I kept a file on this process just in case anybody ever wanted to try and dispute what I had to say. I'm sure its in storage, but I wouldn't hesitate to spend a day digging it out to post documents publicly if I needed to.

In all fairness. Dave did finally pay me back. It just took several years.

Clarification. There are two Daves in this story. Dave Holland was the owner of Desert Alarm, and Dave Sharp was the guy I finally wound up dealing with at DMP.

I know the story Bob.

When I became a Radionics dealer in 1984 I had to make a commitment to use their product..minimum opening purchase and so much a year, in return I got training when needed, great product and support. And additionally I was not competing against trunk-slammers who just wanted the product to bid against me. I liked the arrangement. It was/is the same with DMP. I still service (only) Radionics and have been a DMP dealer since early 90's, I like the product, service and the people I deal with. YMMV, but this has been my experience.

Actually, I have never been a Radionics dealer servicing or otherwise, but the two times I interacted with them I got what I needed with no major issues. Nothing at all like DMP.

I am so gun shy about them after the horrible experience that whenever I have needed to replace a major DMP component I just paid the difference out of pocket and upgraded to a comparable or superior Napco panel. I have eaten more than a couple dollars in parts over the last several years because of this, but I know what it will cost me, and I have not had a single customer complain about getting a brand new panel and keypads. I do not think you really grasp what a horrible experience it was for me.

Napco may be available to anybody, but they have taken good care of me from day one until present. They know who I am and respond to any query I might make.

Welp, it's always important to have a good relationship with your suppliers (as you well know).

I got a "prospect pack" out of the blue last week from Dave Sharp. Wonder what's up with that.

BTW, I got your package too, but haven't opened it up yet. Thanks!

Sounds like sales are in the dumpster... All the big commercial boys that DMP likes to cater to aren't doing a whole lot these days......... DMP told me to get lost when business was good for them, looks like I might get a chance to tell them the same :-))

Guilty...I told David that you might be a good prospect...that was months ago before he left my terror-tory

You don't open boxes the second they arrive?...I can't resist even if I know what's in them.
