In Massachusetts Comcast is advertising to install burglar alarms, cameras, video, monitoring etc. -- all without being licensed by the Commonwealth of Masachusetts, Division of Professional Licensure (formerly the Board of Electrical Examiners), the legal body for licensing electricians.

Those of us who own and operate companies that perform the work of installing alarm systems have been licensed for many years, and must renew the licenses every two years, provided that we attend twenty-one hours of continuing education in each of those two-year periods. All installers and owners must be licensed.

Additionally, the law requires that all employees of alarm and security companies, including employees of central stations, sales and office personnel be checked for criminal records.

The state has gone to court to stop Comcast, but there is a stipulation in the law, that the company may continue doing the work, free from stoppage, while the case winds its way through the courts until finally ajudicated.

The stipulation is there to protect the small installer from losing his source of income due to a wiring inspector who may have mistakenly (or intentionally) stopped the installer -- until final ajudication.

Comcast is not a small installer! In the meantime, because of their ability to grab the eyes and ears of every one of their customers, they are in effect taking business from thousands of properly licensed Massachusetts alarm companies and their installers while Comcast lawyers do their thing.

Whether an injunction is soon issued remains to be seen.
