Bosch Panels and numeric pagers

I have a Bosch 9412G panel and I'd like to make it send messages to my cell's voicemail pager function. The voicemail supports pager mode in this manner.

Pickup phone Dial phone number wait 45 seconds for ringer to time out, message, and instructions press 5 immediately enter numeric string without immediately hangup

I tested all this using my regular telephone on the same phone line with a stopwatch, it works fine that way.

I programmed the panel for 5555551212DDDDDD5, obviously, with the correct phone number. D represents 7 second pauses, 39-45 seconds is sufficient, you can press 5 during the instructions, it doesn't mind that. There also does not need to be a lag between pressing 5 and entering the numeric string. The voicemail wants, but does not require you to press # at the end of the numeric string. I tested both the 42 second rule and assertion that you do not need a delay between 5 and the string, as well as tested that you can hang up immediately after the string is dumped. All those things checked out when I tested it using the phone line, the problem I am having is that the voicemail/pager interface is not reading anything. At first I thought maybe the leading five was getting lost so I changed the account number to 5001 so that the leading digit would be five when it started typing DTMF. I also tried 5555551212ccccccccccccc5 where c is a 3 second pause for 39 seconds of pause I tested this by answering the phone early and it seemed to be waiting patiently for that amount of time and then it dumped the DTMF. Still, when I let it run its course, the voicemail wasnt receiving it. I even heard it type the 5 to get the pager access before it started typing the message out when I tested it by answering. I recognize that using pagers with dialers are so out of style, but I wanted to use it as a corollary to monitoring service. Anyone here set this up before on any panel? Any thoughts on this?

thanks, Logan

I have used the ademco panels with built in paging function and it works fine but other panels i have used the USP 2000 voice dialer which has a paging function and calls cell phones etc. saves all the guesswork and fooling around.

I have with Vista panels and works as long as the pager is the right type format (don't ask me what type...dunno).

I'm not sure the 9412 has a pager feature though.

Logan, if the panel is not configured to communicate via DTMF (telephone touch-tones, otherwise known as dual-tone multi-frequency) protocol to a pager, the pager won't recognize the data being sent to it. This may be why you are not getting data- the panel is only dialing DTMF, and is thereafter communicating via an alarm receiver format such as Contact ID, which is a type of FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) signal. This type of signaling requires that a receiver "answer" a "handshake" before communicating in this proprietary format. You may be getting stuck at the "handshake" attempt, since there is no receiver answering the panel's attempt at communication.

I manually answered my cellphone when the panel called me. I heard it start to dial DTMF and I could recognize the leading digit 5 when it started to dial the tones, so its able to dump DTMF. You may be right about it getting confused, it might not know what to do with the voicemail instructions, as that might confuse it. The panel does have a pager mode, which is what I am using. Also of interest, is if it did NOT press the leading five, it would have just dumped a bunch of DTMF into my voicemail which has not happened at all. Another possibility is its just not dumping anything at all and its giving up due to confusion.

You're confusing the "dialing string", which always uses DTMF, and the "communication string", which is usually FSK. Your panel may be dialing DTMF tones (you said you could hear it) and switching to FSK (as alarm panels will when they're looking for a receiver) waiting for a "handshake". I suspect that, if your panel is indeed capable of true DTMF format pager communication, that it's not programmed to work properly and is looking for an alarm receiver handshake because it's still programmed as a standard alarm communication format. Alarm systems don't just "dump" a signal into an central station receiver- they interactively communicate with it. Double check your programming.

But, I think they do just dump if going to a pager (if panel is capable of pager msging)...and that's always been my contention with sending stuff to a pager...the panel never really knows if it got through.

Yeah, and I think that might be his problem- something isn't programmed right (or the panel isn't pager capable) and it's sitting there trying to handshake with no answer- he may think the handshake tone is a DTMF digit.

I see why you think its trying to handshake. The panel supports pager mode.

From the manual:

Routing Events to a Numeric Pager The 9000 Series Control/Communicators Version 5.22 or higher now have the ability to transmit nearly any event to a numeric pager.

I have firmware 6.30.

Also from the manual:

Programming the Pager Phone Number To program the pager phone number, enter the number used to reach the pager, followed by pauses. A three second pause is created by entering "C." (Example: 5552341CCC.)

You will have to experiment with the number of pauses you add after the page phone number. Each pause is equal to about three seconds. Try calling the pager yourself first and listening to the length of time it takes to get a beep allowing you to enter touch-tone information. This length is what you must program after the pager's phone number in the phone section of the Panel Wide Parameters. If you need a longer pause, enter "D" after the number. Each "D" is equal to seven seconds.

Here is my current theory:

The panel is calling, it doesn't detect the correct voltage change in the phone line when the voicemail answers and so its never able to start counting down the time delay OR it starts the time delay at some other arbitrary point, maybe in the middle of the ringing sequence or something. In either case, it doesn't know when to dump the DTMF string. I think when I manually answer it on my cell, the voltage changes or it otherwise correctly detects that its OK to start the countdown timer and dump digits.

Regarding panel configuration, I believe I have the panel setup correctly to send pages, except for the delay and leading 5 for pager access which is why I am here.

Logan- every control panel has a communication format that must be selected. You have not said what yours is set to. Please check. The section will have choices such as Contact ID, SIA, etc. This is where you will tell it to communicate with a pager.

Bosch panels are funny about how they dial out and what they dial out. If you are using a 5200 programmer it is a lot more difficult than using the RPS software (I think 5.9 is the latest version of RPS). I only use RPS so I can't help you with the 5200. The panel can do pager format. Enhanced Routing RG4 Pager Yes / No

There are 4 groups for notifications. You'll have to set up the pager notification first and then decide what events you want sent to the pager. Since the panel can report about 400 different events you'll have to check carefully.

Ah yes, I am suddenly reminded why I stopped selling Radx...44 page programming "sheet" ...jeez.

Bosch is Radionics? Gee whiz, I have been out of the trade for awhile... If I recall correctly, that one was a chore even for an experienced tech. Logan is gonna have fun gettin that to work...

Yah Bosch now. I was Radx for many many years, stopped selling it when the programming "sheets" became books.
