Please log in for more thread options Just a cursory examination of this other post, a Laserdisc player going for over $700 on ebay! And more like it!!! Am I missing something? Did all laserdiscs make it to DVD or not? Is that why this boat anchor is worth money?

But there are still many things missing (Astaire-Rogers for starters).

It's a little like there is some collectible value or something, and I'm wondering why my company doesn't pay me more money (!)

A big library of LDs might make it reasonable to buy an LD player, as opposed to replacing each LD with a DVD. Here's an eBay search. I see a lot of LD players, and while none of these auctions has ended, I think it's highly unlikely any will sell for anywhere near the $700 you mention above: http://search.ebay.com/laserdisc-player_W0QQsojsZ1QQfromZR40 The above shows 143 LD players for sale, starting at 30 cents and going up to $719. Neither has bids. I do see a Pioneer Elite in as-new condition that's been bid up a bit : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3317&item=5758168642&rd=1 The price is $351 as I write this. But that's pretty exceptional. Some people will bid a lot to get an as-new version of something old. And Elite is Pioneer's high-end line. I've owned some Pioneer Elite gear and was able to sell it for higher prices than I expected. As I write this, I see auctions of LD players ending today where the seller is getting bids as low as only $1. At this moment, the highest bid on an LD player that will sell today is $127.50. There's an LD player offered at $24.50 with no bids at all. It's from a 7-day auction, so buyers have had plenty of time to bid: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3317&item=5756770760&rd=1 As for the high price you mention...let's also keep in mind that consumers don't always act rationally, on eBay or elsewhere. Sometimes in an auction, the bidders get (arguably) overexcited and the bidding gets out of control.

I thought maybe some purists held it in higher esteem or something. And yes, ebay and auctions are insidious.
