Please log in for more thread options Hi, I am new to this NG. I would like to upgrade my present standard TV to something that will last for a while. I am not an avid fan of all the bells and whistles, but have been told to go wide screen. I don't quite understand too much about HD, so any advice would be welcome. I live in Canada, so I understand some of the rules of the game are different. Thanks and help is needed. Jeff

Please log in for more thread options Hi Jeff. I'm a fellow Canadian, and I've just recently found a great website: www.digitalhomecanada.com has tons of great articles and a great forum section. I'll be purchasing a high-definition widescreen TV shortly, and have been doing my research there. While DHC is great for Canadians, I've also found the forums at www.audioholics.com great as well, and well worth a visit. Widescreen is what you want to go with if you plan on watching mainly DVDs and TV programming that's already in widescreen. More and more TV shows are being filmed in widescreen, so why not get a TV that'll take advantage of it? Yes, better to go widescreen. In my humble opinion, if you want something that'll last, don't go for a plasma screen. I've been reading that they tend to require repairs more often and earlier than other types of screens. CRTs offer (still) the best picture of all the different types of TVs but they can be pretty big, bulky, and sometimes kinda ugly.. DLPs and LCOS are my favourites right now. LCDs are pretty good, but I'm not crazy about the "screendoor" effect on some of the earlier models. To learn more about HDTV in Canada, check this out: http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/hdtv/idx/16/330/Technology/article/Introduction_What_Do_I_need_to_watch_HDTV.html as well as a whole slew of articles available on the DHC homepage. Good luck with your research and purchase, Jeff! a fellow Canuckster, vij

Hey Jeff, found a great article you might find informative: http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/specsformats/displays_LCD_DLP_plasma1.html Bear in mind, though, it was written 2/9/2004, so it's not the most up-to-date explanation you might find. cheers, vij > Hi,
