Is there any reason a marine alternator with built in electronic regulator
cannot be run in the opposite direction it's designed for IF proper
cooling is still available?

I can see that spinning it backwards with the existing fan blades won't
cool it, but other than that, I can't see how direction would matter.

Thoughts?

I was going to say that it won't cool properly ;-)

In my vast experience (of fuzting with ONE automotive alternator) I don't
see any other reason why you can't spin it the other way.

You might be able to find the reversed fan in a good alternator shop. Since with
marine twins, one is usually running in
reversed rotation. And Im sure they both have alts.

Other than the fan, it makes no difference.
