Just wondering about YOUR choice/suggestion of a washer & propane
dryer to run in our off-grid solar home.

We're looking for suggestions. We always figured we'd run our
generator while doing laundry...but recently some folks have talked
about alternatives to our choice of "Energy Star" washers and gas
dryers.....they said that there are dryers that DON'T have a energy
eating "glow bar." I've yet to find one on the web.

Any suggestions? And please don't say "a clothes line."

Can't give you a brand or model number, but one of my friends
had a fairly recent (as in 10 y/o or so) gas dryer that
used a spark or glow igniter for just a few seconds when
first turning the unit on. This lit a small pilot light,
which stayed illuminated through the entire drying cycle.

(The main flame cycled on and off as needed, using the pilot
for ignition).

Also, if you can find a 25 plus year old unit with a
standing pilot, you can manually light it at right before
you start drying your clothing, then turn off the gas
when finished.

I suppose you have a compelling reason that a "clothes line" would not
be practical, e.g. laundry volume too high for available line space.

My previous research (for my own purposes) -suggest that
an "Energy Star" clothes dryer is an oxymoron.

My web surfing suggest that the use of propane is based
on eliminating the clothes dryer "heating element" as an electrical
load.
However, propane dryers will still require electricity to run its
drum.
The purpose for going propane thus is to lower the cost of the
electrical generation system by lowering the maximum
sustainable electrical load it must support - while still having
the capacity to do a large volume of laundry in a short time.

While I found various links identifies propane dryers as well as
kits to convert natural gas dryers to liquid propane gas operations
I found no product comparison/reviews for propane dryers.

=46rom reading the product reviews/complaints online - it
appears that if a propane dryer fails in some manner - it often
fails from the start - which suggest that like HVACs - quality
installation is a key/signficant factor in product reliablity and
efficient operation. Which inturn suggest hiring a professional
to do the installation rather than going the do-it-yourself
route.

Another important purpose of going propane rather than electrical in an
off-grid situation is efficiency. It makes little sense to burn fuel in an
expensive generator at (what?) 20% efficiency and then use that electricity to
make heat, when you could burn the same fuel to directly make heat at a much
higher efficiency.

The brand that caters to this market is "Staber" www.staber.com/. If the
price fails to discourage you, do your homework before you decide that their
products are for you. Google "Staber consumer complaints" and then try to find
some current reviews before you buy.

Hopefully, they have cleaned up their act.
