Please log in for more thread options motherboard, runs Windows 2000 Pro. System has been working fine for years... About a week ago, the system wouldn't reset. It'd go to a black screen with a cursor a few lines down, and stick there. No HD noise. Powered down, back up, system has been running fine (up 24/7) since then. So today, I update a piece of software, restart, and get the cursor. Restart again, same. So I powered down, checked a few connections in the case (SATA and HD power mainly), restart - and lonely cursor. Fine. So I try to get into safe mode. Doesn't happen. hmmm. Goes through the full BIOS boot, and hangs right when Windows would start. Tried again, same. Tried again, this time trying to get into the BIOS. pound on DEL till my finger's sore, finally goes to the BIOS right at the end of boot... and no keyboard (it's USB). Four letter words are said. Tried swapping to a different USB port - nothing. Reboot. Can't even get into the BIOS now. USB. Ok. So I unplug everything not needed, with the keyboard plugged directly into the mobo's USB ports (as opposed to the USB PCI card it was on before), reboot, get Windows (eureka!) but... no keyboard. Move the keyboard USB back down to the PCI card, and now it works. So, it seems I have a bad USB port? It may have always been marginal, I've always had little finicky USB problems - mainly that the BIOS would hang on USB device recognition... Does this sound like a manifestation of the bad cap issue? The board was likely built during that timeframe... Does this sound like my mobo's going out? Or is there something else going on that escapes me at the moment? I'm not quite ready yet to replace my mobo, since when I do that I'm going to have to replace the CPU (want dual core), memory (need more), video (it's AGP) and PCI cards (maybe) as well... Any help appreciated! Oh, and I'm just noticing, my wireless USB mouse's cursor's behaving a little erratic as well. More 4-letter words are said. jmc

Please log in for more thread options Not likely. Look for Rubycon, United Chemicon, Nippon, or Panasonic electrolytic caps on your K8V Deluxe. Nichicon also had a good track record until quite recently.

I think some had Ost caps, not exactly the best out there but then again I've other boards with some Ost still running while I've seen a few (other boards with) Ost failed. OP might have mentioned more about the system, and the PSU make, model, and 5VSB rating.

Ah. Well, the system's homebuilt. The PSU is a fairly new (under a year old) CoolerMaster RS-450-ACLX, 450W, and as I wrote in another post, the wattmeter that came with it indicates it has plenty of headroom, system's sucking a mere 10W, and I think it sucks no more than 14watts on boot. Unfortunately, the manual doesn't show a 5VSB rating (can it be called something else?), and because of my case, I can't view the info directly on the ps without completely uninstalling the thing. Sorry, I didn't talk about the PS as I didn't consider it might be at fault, though since USB devices do pull juice that certainly could explain the lonely cursor boot problem, but not the issues with USB not working in BIOS setup or Windows login. jmc

Enable, it should treat the USB keyboard like it was an older PS2 one.. And if that wattmeter is saying 14W at boot and 10W else, DON'T trust it!! Multiply those figures with a factor of at least 10 (ten) as I have never heard of a that lowpowered (desktop)system..... -- Tumppi ================================= Most learned on these newsgroups Helsinki, FINLAND (translations from/to FI not always accurate =================================
