Please log in for more thread options I'm running a Evga 780i (DDR2), Evga 9800gx2, and an Intel Q6600 So if I upgrade, I need a new -board-...-ram-... Would I have to change the Q6600? I'm tempted to get the QX9650, somebody said you won't get the potential out of the QX9650 unless your using DDR3, and it's really not THAT much faster... OR is it? Opinions...? Crysis could use a boost.

No, and even if it were you would get minimal benefit from upgrading towards only the goal of more memory bandwidth. >I'm running a Evga 780i (DDR2), Evga 9800gx2, and an Intel Q6600
You previusly reported the CPU running at 3GHz, and water cooled... you may be able to go a bit higher on water. >
>So if I upgrade, I need a new -board-...-ram-... >Would I have to change the Q6600? No, but you'd want to change it because CPU upgrade is more performance benefit and it would be silly to replace board and memory but not that. In other words the most effective thing for you to do if you're really itching to spend money is upgrade the CPU first to a 45nm Penryn which will hit over 4GHz with water cooling, though if your Zalman is passive (no fan) the water temp gets higher so you may not get much above 4GHz. Real question is, why the upgrade, what specifically is your most important app(s) you wish to improve performance on? Upgrading when what you have already isn't too far below the stock performance of more expensive parts has limited usefulness in many scenarios. >I'm tempted to get the QX9650, somebody said

At stock speed no the difference wouldn't be enough for many to buy one, compared to your overclocked performance now, EXCEPT you may be able to hit 4GHz with one (no guarantees, you are free to and advised to research what the current parts being bought recently overclock to as that ceiling may increase over time). >
>Opinions...? Crysis could use a boost. IMO, video card is more important for that, see what temps it runs then try overclocking with stock 'sink. If it's getting too hot is your case cooling ok? Sometimes having a larger (92-120mm) side panel fan situated to blow 1/4th over, 3/4ths under the card will help, as will improved case exhaust if it isn't very good yet. With the video card o'c, QX9650 o'c to 4GHz and current memory running as fast as it can stabily you should get a fair performance increase. Only by trying it will you know if that is enough but definitely you should replace CPU first, o'c that, then see how you're doing before getting a new board or memory.

I bumped upped my CPU from 3.0 to 3.2ghz and got a 1000 point increase in 3dmark06! It's so stable too. How does a Penryn differ from a Yorkfield?I'm still thinking of getting the QX9650 (Yorkfield). How is a Penryn superior? What kinds of CPU's have them? My Zalman has no fan I DO want to upgrade to a more powerful one pref. with a fan. Yeah, I also have the two fans blowing around the 9800gx2 which does cool it off a bit. Could I get a tiny bit higher boost with my Q6600 with a different water cooler? This is primarily a gaming machine..... I want to upgrade for smoother frame rates in games. If you do 3dmark06 the fastest machine recorded was a guy with a 5.7ghz QX9650 and a 1gb ATI video card. something like 33000 in 3dmark06 How he got it up to 5.7 is beyond me... PS...Another 9800GX2 in quad-sli? Three 8800GTX in triple-SLI? I already have a spare BFG 8800GTX (OC version). ...Seems logical to spend $600 for another 9800 or another $800 for two for 8800GTX's. rather than $1000 for the QX9650... OPINIONS!!??

Why are you continuing to look for only tiny boosts with a large expense? Is your display exceptionally high resolution? You should be able to play Crysis already, though you wrote you hadn't o'c the video card yet which is something to try. >
>This is primarily a gaming machine..... >I want to upgrade for smoother frame rates in games. Ok, but you might have some other problem that's interfering with best efficiency of the gaming? Others are playing Crysis ok with lesser hardware. It doesn't seem very cost effective to do a lot at this point. >If you do 3dmark06 the fastest machine recorded was a guy with a

This is a general hardware forum, it is beyond the purpose to figure out whether a 3DMark score is legit or hacked in some way, and if legit if there was some special defeatured driver or vapor cooling or some other factor. Instead of looking at anomolies, you should compare to the typical system with similar configuration. >

If you're serious it seems a waste of money, but I'm starting to think it's all just a daydream. A real gaming enthusiast should be able to enjoy the game rather than worry about what someone else is doing, games aren't designed only to play on $2200+ systems.

A real gaming > enthusiast should be able to enjoy the game rather than > worry about what someone else is doing, games aren't > designed only to play on $2200+ systems. lol,... Seriously, I have about $1500 in cash that I want to put into my puter. Call it a "waste" if you want, but I have a lot of disposable income at this time. another lol,... I have been playing video games since I was seven I am a real gamer for sure. I don't play FPS games that much. I just happen to have a copy of Crysis. It's a rad game, certianly my favorite FPS. It's the most taxing game so it's the best to benchmark DX 10 stuff,IMO. Lastly... If you don't have anything positive to say, or offer no relevant suggestions. Please don't reply again. I'm a responsible adult, and am quite capable of managing my time and money. P.S. I was skeptical about that 5.7ghz on 3dmark06 thats WHY I mentioned it.
