Hi all,

An update in a new thread here. My new system build:

Asus P5K Premium
2 gig Kingston Memory
WD 350 gb Caviar drive
Lite on SATA DVD
Antec Phantom 500W
Nvida GTS 8800
Creative Audigy 2 platnum

I returned the Crucial memory and replaced with Kingston. This was the
consensus in the post below and the ASUS tech support felt that this board
does not like Crucial memory.

I am still having the same issue with the kingston. The KVR800D2N5K2/2G is
on the Kingston site as one of four products DDR 800 products compatable
with my MB. There are only 2 on the QVL and the 1mb memory on the QVL is not
on the manufacturer's site. The 1mb alternative on the QVL is not even
listed on the Kingston site. The specs on the 2N5K2 / 2G are the same,
however, as the 512mb alternative on the QVL. In the end, this memory should
not be the issue.

One thing to note. The 12v ATX has two plugs. It is my understanding that
you only need one plugged in if you are not in an SLI config. I plugged both
in with just my single GTS 8800. The ASUS tech suppor did not feel that it
should be an issue. Could that be an issue for me.

Any other thoughts would help. I'm clearing CMOS and will try with Vista 32
one more time. Then once with XP. Then the MB is going back.

Posted this above,, I'll post this again as this is the new thread ;)

I don't think it was the memory.
All those people who have these problems have different memory
after all ;) I have Aenaeon DDR2-667 (2x512 MB). Very basic memory.
No high-performance overclocker stuff ;) I also tried a basic
single-channel config with only one of those modules. No difference.

It hangs @ different stages, the errors *vary slightly* from time to
time. Something is just unstable about that board ... I think.

I tried:

- different SATA cables (also some that did not come with the board)
- all the different onboard SATA ports
- ... with three different SATA HDs (2x Samsung, 1x Western Digital)
- I tried it with the *BIOS defaults*, that makes no difference.
So it's not wrong BIOS settings.
- I also removed *all* addon cards, leaving my GeForce 8600GT as the
only card.

Using a PCI addon SATA controller card from Promise, the HDs work
*fine*, no installation issues, no nothing. It's the onboard ports that
make trouble.

Have you read the thread I pointed out ?
The thread's starter (smellybumlove) seemed to have the same problems as
we have and he has tried several different P5K Premiums. Then he got the
older P5K deluxe and his instllation instabilities were gone.

*if* you get yourself a replacement board, please report back
if that makes any difference.

Please also keep bugging the ASUS support, only if they recieve enough
flak they will notice that there is an issue.

They also told me: maybe its the memory, maybe its the Power Supply.
It is not. Thats what I replied ;)

As for your 4pin / 8 pin plug:

I have a 8600GT, and have plugged in the 8-Pin Plug from my Seasonic S12
430W. That should be more than enough power. Even if you don't,
(ie only use a 4 pin one), it will be enough stable power for non-SLI
configs. That can't be the issue.

Best wishes,
Raynor

One more thing:

If you try to install XP, please tell me what happens exactly for you.

For me it seems to freeze for short periods during the initial copy
stage (the initial stage where you are still in text mode with that
blue screen and the yellow progress bar.)
The progress bar freezes for short periods of time, making the initial
copy phase *much* slower than it should be.

Then, when he tries to boot in the graphical mode to continue the
installation ... that won't work ;) I only get a black scren and
"error loading operating system". End of story. Tried a gazillion times.

Note that these short freezes are typical for the problem, at least for me:

When I boot my *old XP installation* from my old seagate HD on the new
board (I kept my old XP, surprisingly using it and booting it works
fine) and try to copy some data to some second HD, I also get these
periodic freezes , accompanied with lots of errors in the windows
event viewer (Controller error, partity error, timeout error).

Best wishes,
Raynor.

Hangs in the copy section on XP install at 28%. With the Crucial memory it
only made it to 10% so I'm 2x better! Just does not go to the end.

I did not f6 the drivers. It formated and did the copy fine up to that
piont. I do not have a 3.5" drive on this set up. I can install an old one
but it seemed to be doing fine. I'm certainly not an expert here but not
sure if you need to F6. If it was installing fine w/o the drivers, did
format etc then I'm not sure that you need them.

Again, I most certainly could be wrong here. But I think I will go with the
vista install. I likely need to return this board. It may be a bit too
advanced for my abilities.

You don't need the f6 drivers if you leave the SATA Controller
in its standard configuration in the BIOS ("Enhanced" and "IDE"
that is).

I also don't think this has to do with your abilities.
You pretty much did what is possible for a normal human being ;)

ASUS Support have not been helpful, they just tell me that the Board
must be faulty.

Best Wishes,
Raynor
