Please log in for more thread options money. I read in Computer Games magazine that ati has dropped their prices on 1900XT/XTX series of cards to arounf $250 making them a good buy. If you want to change your memory, then I would go for AMDs AM2 standard as their processors are just as inexpensive as the socket 939. AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ Socket 939 CPU, 2.2Ghz, 2x512k L2 - retail box $245.84 Asus A8N-SLI-Premium nForce4 SLi Socket 939 Mainboard w/Cool Pipe Technology, 4DDR3200, 2xPCI-Ex16, 2xPCI-Ex1, 3xPCI, 4xATA133, 8xSATA300, 8Ch Audio, 2x10/100/1000Lan, 10xUSB2.0, 2x1394a Firewire $180.84 Seagate 320GB 7200rpm SATA300 Hard Drive 16MB Buffer $124.84 Seagate 250GB 7200rpm SATA300 Hard Drive 16MB Buffer $102.84 Sapphire Radeon X1900XT 256MB DDR3 PCI-Ex16 Graphics Card - Dual DVI, Video-In, Video-Out $307.84 -- Love and Teach, Not Yell and Beat Stop Violence and Child Abuse. Please log in for more thread options Yeah, but how long will a 939 system last for games? Will it last for two to three years for current (e.g., Call of Duty 3, Oblivion, etc.) and upcoming games (e.g., Crysis, Command & Conquer 3, etc.)? Will it be a bottleneck for the newer video cards? Again, I am a graphic freak even though I use 1152x864 resolution. > AMD Athlon64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ Socket 939 CPU, 2.2Ghz, 2x512k L2 -

Please log in for more thread options It does appear that cpu speeds won't be getting too much faster than whats
out there right now, which is one reason why multicore processors are being built. CPU speeds have apparently been topped out for now. Having a motherboard that can run some of the fastest cpus, be it 939, AM2, or conroe will be adequate. Toms Hardware/ HardOCP one of them did a bunch of tests and stated that if you had a AMD 2.4 ghz(or equvilent Intel), this would be adequate. Its going to be the vidcard that will make the differece in the future. Having a motherboard that can run SLI/Crossfire would be of benefit to you since your a gamer, and having a good power supply(which you seem to have for now) to run them will be more important for gamers. Just know that future vidcards will require lots of power and even a 600 watter might not be enough. The X1900XT requires 150 watts to run and future cards will require more according to Maximum PC/CPU. Then double it for SLI/Crossfire -- Love and Teach, Not Yell and Beat Stop Violence and Child Abuse. No such thing as Bad Kids. Only Bad Parents. Friends don't turn friends on to drugs. You have to decide what you want to spend those $$ on! Right now you can spend your $$ on a high-end Gfx card and a S939 MoBo with FX55 or X24200/4600, or a lesser card with an FX57. OR, you can get a more expensive AM2 or Intel Core 2 MoBo/CPU combo, and spend the remainder on the Gfx. ANY of the choices will play games for as long as you want! Even your CURRENT system will play games for 2 or 3 more years! YOU are imposing both the performance limits (though those are really sketchy) AND the $$ limits. Since games appear to be your PRIMARY concern, I'd go with the FX-57, since you can't afford a Core 2 Extreme. You can get a second Gfx card and go to SLI later if you feel the need (though your heat concerns make this a dicey move). If you'd rather go dual-core, go with an AM2 or Intel MoBo for future upgradability, and live with whatever Gfx card you can afford after that. | |||||||||||||
