I have just recently acquired an EPoX 8RDA+ (revision 1) motherboard
and an AMD Sempron 3000+ Barton 2GHz processor.

>From what I can see in the specs for the processor on the web, the CPU
multiplier should be set to 12 giving a 2GHz clock at 333MHz FSB.

However, in the BIOS of my board the multiplier is locked at 11. Does
anyone know why this would be? From what I can tell, the board has
the latest BIOS (July 29, 2004).

Any info would be appreciated.

Does the POST screen report the CPU correctly? The CPU is locked at 12x
whatever the motherboard BIOS says. Install CPU-Z and check speed.

I don't think there are any switches on the board (not really sure
they look like though), only a jumper that sets the FSB to 133 or
166. I have it on the 166 setting.

The BIOS has the processor multiplier set to 12.0, the FSB to 166.
The POST screen reports:

Main Processor: AMD Sempron (tm) 1833MHz
Memory Testing: 1048576 ok
CPU Real Clock: 1833Mz (166MHz x 11.0)

CPU-Z shows the multiplier set to 11 too. A sample of the output is
here:

Processors Information
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Processor 1 (ID = 0)
Number of cores                1
Number of threads        1 (max 1)
Name                        AMD Sempron
Codename                Barton
Specification                AMD Sempron(tm)
Package                        Socket A (462)
CPUID                        6.A.0
Extended CPUID                7.A
Core Stepping
Technology                0.13 um
Core Speed                1837.8 MHz (11.0 x 167.1 MHz)
Rated Bus speed                334.2 MHz
Instructions sets        MMX (+), 3DNow! (+), SSE
L1 Data cache                64 KBytes, 2-way set associative, 64-byte line size
L1 Instruction cache        64 KBytes, 2-way set associative, 64-byte line
size
L2 cache                512 KBytes, 16-way set associative, 64-byte line size
FID/VID Control                no
K7 Thermal sensor        yes

I have tried the following tests:

FSB: 166
Mult: 12.0
Result: boots as above

FSB: 166
Mult: 11.0
Result: boots as above

FSB: 166
Mult: 10.0
Result: won't boot

FSB: 200
Mult: 12.0
Result: boots with POST showing 2200MHz (200 x 11)

FSB: 200
Mult: 11.0
Result: ditto

FSB: 200
Mult: 10.0
Result: won't boot

So it looks as though the multiplier is locked at 11. And while I
could run at 200FSB, I don't think the CPU is rated for it. Nor am I
certain that my version of the 8RDA+ (1.0) is stable at 200FSB.

Any ideas? Any guesses as to where the problem may lie? With the
motherboard or the processor? I suppose I could swap the CPU into
another machine and see what happens.

Where did you get CPU? Have you checked markings on CPU? If it will run
stable on 200 FSB, go for it!

Mike.
