PCI-e video card and PSU compatibility

Please log in for more thread options I am building a system for a friend. Not a high power one but one for web surfing and multimedia use. Components: ASUS M2N-E AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 Ultra MCP ATX AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core --ASUS EN8500GT SILENT MAGIC/HTP/512M GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16 G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 Plus 3 hard drives (7200rpm) and a DVD-RW drive I have a spare Antec True Power 430w I was going to use for this system. The PSU is 20 pin while the motherboard is 24 pin. I know it is quite possible in general to run a PSU 20pin with a 24pin MB, but I have been uncertain, with the video card noted above, if this arrangement would work okay. I have read that one should only be conerned if running SLI or Crossfire for 20pin PSU and 24pin MB combinations. Thank you for any advice! | |||||||||||||

Please log in for more thread options According to this, the 8500 GT is 40W. There is no PCI Express 2x3 Aux power connector on the card, so that means roughly 12V @ 3.5A flows through the PCI Express slot connector. Add the 0.5A for three small cooling fans, and the total is 12V @ 4A going through the single 12V wire on the 20 pin main power connector. Up to 6A is allowed. http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=514&card2= From an old post, these are the numbers for the Truepower 430W. (You can verify against the label on the side of the supply, to be sure.) VOLTAGE + 5V +12V +3.3V -5V -12V +5VSB TRUE430 36A 20A 28A 0.5A 1.0A 2.0A Working out the 12V loading on the single rail 1) Processor 12V @ 6.0A 2) Video 12V @ 3.5A 3) Fans 12V @ 0.5A 4) HDD 12V @ 3*0.6A 5) ODD 12V @ 1.5A+ Total 12V @ 13.3A Even if I'm off an amp or two, the 20A rating has it covered. Should be OK on power as well. (12 * 13.3) + 50W + 3*5W + 1*7.5W + 10W = 242W Paul | |||||||||||||
