Hi, I can't get my computer to turn off, using the on/off button on
the case.

I assembled my own computer from parts a friend gave me when he
upgraded, and bought my own cheap case, but almost everything seems to
work.

I have an ASUS mobo, A7M266. and I'm running win98SE. Under Power
Management/Advanced, i have "When I press the power button on my
somputer: SHUTDOWN". (Sleep is the only other choice, but it doesn't
sleep either when I press it. Nothing happens.)

The only thing I don't understand is the on/off switch! It must work,
because I turn off the UPS every night, and after I turn on the UPS
the next day, I need to push the on/off button for the computer to
start up, and it does, every time.

But sometimes I want to turn the computer off with the same button,
and nothing happens. I've tried pushing it normally, pushing it
quickly, and i've tried holding it down for a few seconds.

I think maybe it worked a couple times a couple years ago, but I'm not
even sure about that anymore.

How do they work??!!

Thanks

What happens if you go to the Start button and select 'Turn Off'?
Google 'Win 98 shutdown problem', you'll get plenty of hits.

Mike.

If I go to the Win98 options, which are Start button/Shut Down/Shut
Down, it shuts down fine, including the PC fans, and doesn't restart.

It's not a win98 problem. It's a hardware question, and maybe a
hardware problem. That's why I came to a hardware ng. I want to be
able to shut the computer down with the On/Off switch when the
computer is frozen, or when I'm in native DOS. I thougght the On/Off
switch would turn the computer off, but it only turns it on.

Modern computers use an ACPI event to allow the OS to trap the power
button and initiate a graceful shutdown (if the OS monitors said ACPI
event)

Press and hold the button for several seconds to force a hardware
shutdown.

Many BIOSes can be configured to use a delay (which allows the OS to
trap the event) or not (which forces an instant power off)

I had tried that, but maybe only for 3 seconds and not four.

After I read what you have here, I held it down for what I counted off
as 5 or 6.

Then I looked in the Bios and yeah, I had chosen Standby as the option
for holding the button for less than 4 seconds (but that did nothing
maybe because Standby is disabled on this computer. I have to check.)

And "soft off" or maybe "soft shutdown" for more than 4 seconds (read
that more than 6 seconds). The second time period only had this one
possibility.

I changed the first 4 seconds to make it "soft off" too, and I guess
you and Michael and Kony and Steve solved my problem. Thanks to you
all.
