Hi All!
I'm completely stuck on this problem so I thought I'd see if any of you guys
could come up with anything...
On a xp system I built 3 months ago, while I was using my Microsoft wireless
(USB) mouse the screen cursor jumped and went dead. I have always had a second
mouse (USB) ready to operate should the batteries fail in the first mouse, but
it also could not move the cursor. (Also clicks not registering.)
After rebooting the mouse cursor remained steadfastly at the centre of the
screen.
After reinstalling the drivers - same thing.
I tried safe mode and Yay! the mouse cursor worked again!
I used the system restore to take it back by one day (although I had not
installed anything new) rebooting into xp - the mice still worked - Job done, I
thought.
Ten minutes later the mouse cursor froze again. Repeating the safe mode/System
restore did not bring back mouse cursor control.
I found an old serial mouse and plugged that in - it works!
I've tried using different USB ports for the mice, with no effect.
In case someone asks -I haven't got a ps/2 mouse to hand, so haven't tried that.
All my other USB devices are working well.
Any thoughts? I'm fresh out!

Mike

I have a similar problem and in my case it seems to stem from the VIA
chipset drivers and their problems with USB. Every month or two,
usually i the middle of somethng really important, the mouse freezes -
everything else works fine - and the only cure is a cold reboot.

It is a PC I built for my wife to use and it drives her mad.

I suggest looking at the chipset drivers, especially if they are VIA.

I had that problem on a pc. The cause was problems with the 5v
supply. Replacing the power supply cured it.

Yikes! I didn't even consider that!
Did it not affect any other subsystem?
(My machine is behaving perfectly in all other respects)

At the time nothing else appeared to be having problems.
