Please log in for more thread options plug on a P IV computer. Since we will need to buy another power supply, and that means amil ordering it (rural area without computer parts stores), there will be a delay. This is for a friend because since her power supply died, she cant go online. She needs to be online for business, so I am going to lend her my space computer, which is a Pentium 266. With Windows 98SE installed. Yea, it's slow, but she just needs to get email so that should work till her parts come. The problem is that she has DSL internet. I dont have DSL in my area so I have never even touched a DSL setup. I just use my 56K dialup modem. Her DSL box (is that a special modem, or what?), connected to her dead computer via a cable that is connected to a plug on ger computer that is labelled ETHERNET. My old computer has an ethernet card with that same plug. So, I believe as far as hardware we are ok. So, I plug in all the cables, and then what? I dont have a faintest clue what to do. I could get a dialup connection working in minutes, but I have no idea how to set up the DSL. She had someone from a computer store connect the DSL to her Pentium IV with XP on it, and she paid a fortune to get that hooked up. I am just doing her a favor an it's only for a week or so. If only I knew what to do. Remember, this is for Win98SE. Can anyone help? Thanks George

Please log in for more thread options at all, but most do. Some use an internal "modem," others an external modem. There are just too many variations to deal with here. Sometimes DSL won't work at all for some locations due to distance or interferences. Go to the company that you signed up with and they will have instructions and free technical support to get you "sinked up." Have you tried browsing for a website? You might have to turn on the Ethernet port in your BIOS - at start-up.

As long as the current Win98 installation on the old computer can see the Ethernet port, there should be no inherent problem. You should be able to simply plug the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem into the computer. However, some ISPs limit the DSL/cable service to the MAC address of the specific Ethernet card that is originally hooked up to the DSL/cable modem. If that is the case, you may have to call the ISP and have them remove that lock or change the MAC address to the one on the replacement computer.
