I have a computer that, of all DVD Burners I've tried, refuses to burn
any dvd. It gives some error saying either the drive isn't installed
or that the media is incompatable.

I've already swaped out and tried 3 different drives, rebooted and
everything.

Can someone help?

Does the drive show up in the bios? If not then from what you say it could
be that the IDE channel or the data cable are bad. You might try connecting
the drive to the same cable as your hard drive as a slave, while jumpering
the hdd as a master with slave.

Is this system running any particular OS, something like
Unix or FreeNAS or LynxOS or ??

Let's suppose windows, since it's a popular one. Does the
drive show up properly identified in Device Manager? Did
you update your burning software to latest version or at
least patched to support these specific drives? This latter
variable is the most common problem sometimes even occurring
with the software shipped with the (retail packaged) drive.

Get a new 80 pin IDE cable - if that's the interface
If its SATA drives, you definitely have to have the latest firmware for the
drive AND
patches for the software.
The software must recognize the drive.
NO ZIP drives on the same IDE as the burner
