Get rid of your USB modem and get a proper modem/router that
connects via cat5e ethernet.

I will be next month anyway. I wondered if that might cure it as well.

My mystery was solved by switching back to cable from DSL.

"System Hangs" is a symptom which can be caused by so many different
things - hardware, drivers, services, spyware, etc.. It's sort of a
one-size-fits-all description of a problem.

Increased adoption of higher-powered systems?
The higher powered video cards and CPUs have been out for
awhile, but that doesn't necessarily mean everyone ran out
and bought one at that point.
