My current HD is sounding much louder over time. I am concerned that
it may be failing. If this is true, how could I transfer the software
programs that I have currently loaded on this HD to a new HD? My
concern are the software programs I have loaded via the web on my
current HD with no backup CD-ROM disks. I would appreciate any
assistance that you could provide me.

If you are in the UK, then go out and pick up a copy of PC Pro - there is
free software on the cover disk this month to clone a hard disk - if the new
one is larger it will sort itself out.

There are many hard drive clone / backup solutions - google for them and
there's bound to be a basic cheap/free one.

On my copy of issue #96, of the British publication PC-Utilities magazine,
there was a DVD full of programs, one of which was Paragon Drive Copy 8.0
SE.

The program does require registration in order to use it. Once registered
you will receive an email with a serial number. Even with that you don't
have to pay anything for the program itself or it's use other than
purchasing a copy of the magazine that has not had the DVD removed from the
cover.

The better bookstores in the USA usually carry the publication, mine came
from my local Borders bookstore.

Keep it simple. Assuming you are on Winders, try xxcopy
(xxcopy.com). Free, and he has a whole section on instructions for
cloning.
