Please log in for more thread options i'm going to renew my htpc, transitioning from a Athlon-XP 3000, to a Pentium-M solution. In detail: Motherboard:AOpen i915GMm-HFS CPU: any Pentium-M rainging from 750 to 780. Here comes my troubles: The mobo says it support 479-pin CPU, but i find a lot of ebay auctions where CPU stated as 479 chip, are instead described by the intel Processor Spec finder, as 478 pin. Further details: the mobo manual says: "This socket supports uFCPGA & uFCBGA package CPU", and this gives me even more confusion. Can someone give me a clear explanation of which kind of CPU i need to buy? thanks in advance | |||||||||||||

Please log in for more thread options of the sellers know very little about what they are selling. You could buy what YOU think is a Pentium-M 760 that turns out to be a Pentium 4 560. Not that Intel's new number system didn't cause enough confusion, right? Instead, but from an actual computer component vendor (NewEgg and TigerDirect come to mind). "478 pin Micro-FCPGA and 479 ball Micro-FCBGA packages". The socket on your motherboard has 479 holes. One hole is blocked out of the 480 maximum positions, leaving 479 holes. The pin grid array chip (FCPGA) that plugs into the socket, seems to have 478 pins, and two pins are missing in one corner. The Socket is "S479", but the pin grid array processors that will fit the socket seem to have 478 pins. Using either the SSpec or the Order Code, and processorfinder.intel.com , you should be able to get some info on what you are buying. I hope you cannot actually find any FCBGA 479 ball packaged processors at retail (like on Newegg), because an end user cannot solder those (easily) to a blank PCB.
