It localises the sound, what you can hear is primarily what is coming up the
straw.

I know the smell you speak of, it's electrolyte from the capacitors on
the mainboard....Take a look at your board, at the shiny blue/black
"cans", try to find one on the board that looks puffed out,
or is leaking.

Remembering the days of thunderbird (no pun intended), those CPU's
were notoriously hard on MB's and ran at high temps. The era of this
CPU was also when AMD was really starting to race INTeL for clock
speeds and bus speeds so I guess you can imagine why they are hard on
MB's
