I've just had a Western Digital SATA drive delivered which appears to be
quite dead. It was wrapped in what looks like polythene bubble wrap so I
suspect static damage. Aren't WD disks normally shipped in an
anti-static bag?

Normally, yes. And with the decant (or whatever that stuff is) for
moisture. And then normally the drive in the bag is placed in bell ends
(packaging).
Optional docs/cable/screws etc are tucked in the box loose.

Yes, but even then it seems more likely something else
happened inbetween the time it was taken out of the orig.
packaging and placed in the bubble wrap instead of ESD
damage.

Sounds like a used or refurbished drive. Send it back for refund or if
you purchased it from WD for a new one. No one ships bubble wrap from
the factory anymore.

Thanks all. No anti-static bag, no moisure absorbing gel pack, no jumpers,
ne screws, no "congratulations on buying..", no anti-static or installation
notes. Definitely going back.
