Single Mode Laser over MM Fiber???

Is it possible to connect 2 single mode laser interfaces over multimode fiber ?

I know your supposed to use SMF but would MMF work ?

If not why ?

Thanks,

Kevin

MMF may work, especially if you use (extremely expensive) core offset launch cords. All MMF fibers (laser-optimized are exception) have problems supporting the gradient index in the very center of the fiber's core due to manufacturing process. As a result, a SMF device will be shooting right into the very center of the core, where the light is going to escape right out. The offset launch cords channel the light into the middle of the fiber, where the index is already in the nice gradient profile, capable of transmitting it over long distances.

would shoter distances increase the chance of mmf working better ?

lets say 10 feet ?

No. The stuff is cheap enough. Why not just buy some?

there is no yes or no answer, you have to consider

  1. signal bandwidth
  2. sensitivity of the receiver (may need an attenuator)
  3. bandwidth.distance product of the mm fibre (this can vary enormously depedent of production process)

In general over a short ditance them there will be no problem, (other than ensuring that the receiver is not swapmed)

there are issues regarding the launch conditions etc, but these are generally not an issue until you get towards the Gigabit regime.

cheers
