Can I use a 8 year multimode fiber cable sc terminated with recent 3com switch? Now there are some old 3com switches with 100baseSx transeicever... I would use them with 1000base-sx... can I? thanks

That will depend on the MM fibre type 50/125 or 62.5/125 and on the distances. If they are according the OM1 or OM2 standard the will reach 30 or 80 meter.

It all depends on the size of the core (50/125 or 62.5/125) the MM has. And the distances.
For 1Gb/s link with 1000base-SX we have:
OM 1, 62.5=B5m goes up to 275m OM 2, 50=B5m up to 550m OM 3, 50=B5m up to 1100m OM 3+, 50=B5m up to 1100m
all @ 850nm.

Yes, you are right, my values were for 10 Gbit/s.
