Seminal paper about ethernet over long distances

I was recently discussing this with some one, and the issue came up that before the 50microsec RTT limit imposed by IEEE was put, some intrepid engineers implemented Ethernet over really long distances... cross US. Does anyone know of an orignal reference to these people/ efforts or a paper about them?

Thanks.

I don't know the paper you're talking about, but the 50 ms RTT corresponds to the 500m collision diameter seen in, say 10base5 (yellow garden hose).

Where there are only two stations (or otherwise switch isolated), the limit does not apply. 10baseT has been reported to work over

750' of Cat5. i1000' wouldn't surprise me. Then there is LRE (Long Range Ethernet) with special electronics. Of course, that usually means inter-building with all the lightening vulnerability that brings in.
