going through a hub

If you are going through a hub, does that automatically force your Ethernet card to operate in half duplex mode?

It _should_, but if you've done something silly like nailed the interface to full-duplex, then it won't.

Where are you running into a hub nowadays anyway? Are you _certain_ (even ignoring the labels and sales and marketing literature) that it's not a switch? [Remember, things like "10/100 hubs" have switches in them...]

No. You just won't get any link negotiation pulses, and when you do not get any negotiation pulses your system is supposed to use half duplex. If your system has been set to not use autonegotiation, there is no way for the hub to force your system to change its settings to what it should be.
