Why use subinterfaces

I am studying for a Cisco exam and came accross subinterfaces. Now I know what they are, how to configure them and such, but i am not sure what their purpose would be in a real world scenario. It is clear that i am missing a key piece of information here but i am not sure which piece i am missing. Simple question to answer i am sure but i am curious. Thanks.

They're used any time that you need to have multiple virtual interfaces associated with a single physical interface. For instance, on an ATM or Frame Relay network, you would use subinterfaces to create a separate network for each PVC. And on an Ethernet LAN you can use subinterfaces to create VLANs.
