Do I need to worry about spanning tree if I have no redundant or failover
links?

depends....
Do you like the idea, that your hole network is down, because a silly user
plugged both ends of a UTP cable into the switch ?
(This actually happends alot more than ppl like to think!)

STP gives you a loopfree environment, so if you worry about loops, then STP
can help you.

Somewhere i read about the injection of malicious STP packets for DoS
attacks and other bad things... so what would be the best way to achieve
both, security and loop free connections?
